Why not try Video (Online) Relationship Counselling?
We’re currently living though a health and economic crisis the likes of which none of us have ever experienced before, and we are all needing to adjust in how we work, live of our lives, and do things in general.
Relationship counselling has always been a very personal face-to-face service, and we have all liked it that way. We share intimate details of our life with a trusted therapist, feel heard and supported, gain some insight into our patterns and learn new skills we can take home.
So how can we possibly replicate this in an Online situation?
You’d be very surprised how well we can. I have been doing Online Video sessions with clients who live a distance from me, for many years now, and the overwhelming response from them is they are amazed at how “personal” and similar it feels, after just the first 5 minutes.
And I have found that therapeutically, it is very effective too. It really is the next-best thing to face -to -face counselling.
And then there’s a few other added benefits – a saving in travel time, and also having to find babysitters.
You also have the benefit of being able to choose the therapist who looks most suited to you, without worrying about where they are physically located.
Advantages of Video/Online sessions
- Online sessions allow you to choose your absolute best choice and most appropriate Psychologist for your particular issues, no matter where you live
- It is often easier to co-ordinate both you and your partner’s schedules if you are having your session at home.
- Often after-hours appointments are available
- You have the convenience of talking at home, which also saves you travel time.
- You can more easily manage your children rather than having to organize a babysitter.
What our clients have said
“I was really apprehensive at first, but it was easy as I was sent instructions and a link, and after a few minutes I didn’t think about it… it was like being face to face”.
“We had thought of postponing our sessions until face to face was available, but our situation was getting worse, so we tried it and we found it really helpful”.
“I actually really like sessions on videolink. It saves me so much time, not having to travel to appointments. I settle the kids with a video for fifty minutes or so, and I got to the privacy of a separate room for the duration”.
“I put off telehealth for a while, hoping face to face would be available soon, but due to the immune problems for some family members, I decided not to take the risk. I gave it a try to be safe, and I’m so glad I did. It has been a life saver”.
“We actually prefer sessions on video in the comfort of our home and we can talk straight afterwards about what we learned. I hope we are able to continue in this format”.
Important considerations
– The most important consideration is that you need to be mindful that your room has privacy. Most people find that this is not difficult to manage. If you have children, make sure you have set them up in another room with things to keep them happy.
– When you are preparing for your couple’s session, make sure you sit side by side on a sofa or have your individual chairs set close together, then set up your computer screen so that both of you are visible on the screen at the same time.
– You will also need to set up Skype on your computer. This is a very easy process which only takes a minute or two.
– It can also be helpful to ask your Psychologist for their phone number and also give them yours, at the beginning of the session, so on the very odd occasion that the connect drops out briefly, you have a way to stay in contact. This does not happen often, but it is best to be prepared.
