More about Brett

What are three strengths you have as a Psychologist/Counsellor?
  1. I have a gentle and soothing disposition that people feel safe for unpacking sensitive and vulnerable content.
  2. I’m able to help couples address difficult topics and go deeper in to their experience than has been the case when they’ve worked with other therapists.
  3. I’m able to slow down a couple and zoom-in to what’s happening in their experience of conflict to gently see what vulnerability underlies their reactivity.
What is the most satisfying and fulfilling part of the work you do?

Seeing couples who were struggling with constant conflict, and who placed their trust in me to help them make change, demonstrate better emotional connection and mutual trust.

Seeing partners express vulnerability and openness to each other in new ways that previously didn’t seem possible.

Helping partners make sense of their communication struggles, supporting them to discover new ways of relating to each other.

What’s an example of a couple you have helped the most?

A couple where one person was feeling deeply hurt and betrayed by her partner’s behaviour. The other person felt misunderstood, defensive, and was anxious to express himself from fear of making things worse.

Through working together, he was able to make sense of, and experience validation for, his defensiveness and anxiety. She was able to heal, and feel heard, seen and validated by her partner. The couple reported improvements in communication and intimacy, both emotional and physical.
