About Caryn

With more than 25 years as an experienced and accredited counsellor, facilitator, executive and life coach, Caryn has been helping individuals, relationships and families deal effectively with life challenges over many years, and focusses on helping them all to thrive in their lives moving forward.

As a widely experienced practitioner, Caryn is passionate about her work to help people become more empowered in their choices, take control of their lives, and feel more content and satisfied in everything they do. To do so, she helps clients understand their triggers, assess situations and events that overwhelm them and then helps them design practical strategies and techniques to deal with life’s adversities.

Drawing on her vast experience and academic background, Caryn walks alongside her clients to help guide and assist them, and as a former lecturer in psychology at the Australian College of Applied Psychology and the Jansen Newman Institute, she is well-known for helping people successfully deal with their challenging life situations by overcoming their fears and making changes where they want to, so that real growth occurs across all aspects of their life.

An ’Eclectic’ approach

Caryn (a recipient of 10 international and national awards for her work in helping Organisations and leaders to be effective and Empowering Women to Thrive), sensitively helps her clients move forward, using a host of skills and strategies and a range of modalities to assist them – examples include Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, the Psychodynamic approach, aspects of Positive Psychology, Systemic Family Therapy and the Narrative approach to help clients change old ‘scripts.’

However, she sees her approach as more ‘eclectic.’ She likens how she works to going to a restaurant where you may have many different food choices and you can pick and choose as you wish. This is how she works, drawing from many different modalities, strategies and approaches that she feels would best fit the client/s with whom she is working in the moment.

In 2005, she was instrumental (under the auspices of Lifeline) in helping set up the 1800 RESPECT line that operates today by designing and delivering key training for hundreds of the original counsellors to take calls on the line. Her work in this area was hugely successful and the Line still operates today.

Over 25 years

What are three strengths you have as a Psychologist/Counsellor?
  • Optimistic
  • Thorough
  • Enthusiastic
What is the most satisfying and fulfilling part of the work you do?

Seeing people feel better about themselves and their lives over time. To be able to move clients from ‘surviving’ to ‘thriving’ so they can be happy and enjoy their everyday lives.

What’s an example of a couple you have helped the most?
As an example of how she helps clients, Caryn worked with this couple for a year. On the brink of divorce when they arrived, she gently gave them strategies, communication
approaches and techniques to work better together as a couple so their relationship could be deeply enhanced.
They are still together, and they tell her that their relationship is better than ever.
