About Nissa

Nissa is an experienced counsellor and social worker who believes that we all have the potential to live out our best lives. Bringing over 12 years of experience, she specialises in supporting both couples and individuals who have become lost from themselves and from each other, who feel overwhelmed with the expectations of life and find it difficult to know where to start.

Working from a value based person-centred approach, she is able to connect with her clients on an individual level and establish a practical plan to initiate and evaluate change. She understands the barriers to accessing support and works within her client’s perspective to gain and maintain a personal commitment to growth.

Nissa is passionate about assisting people to unlock their unconscious barriers to growth, overcome self-sabotage and recognise their ability to self-fulfill. Giving hope to the hopeless and power to the powerless forms the basis of the support that she offers.

She brings a diversity of experience in both a personal and professional context. She has worked extensively to broaden her knowledge with specialised training in managing high conflict and trauma with a firm and respectful approach. She provides a non-judgemental, safe space to explore client’s deepest fears and reconnect with their authentic self.

More about Nissa

How many years counselling experience do you have?

Over 14 years of experience as an accredited social worker and counsellor, working in a diverse range of settings including domestic violence, correctional facilities, youth and family services and employment assistant programs.  I have worked extensively with both couples and individuals with unique and diverse presentations to better understand themselves and reconnect with their goals and values.

What are three strengths you have as a Psychologist/Counsellor?
  1. The ability to meet clients where they are at in their journey and create sustainable change based desired outcomes.
  2. Diverse employment history with a strong focus on trauma and how it impacts on interpersonal relationships and daily living.
  3. Strong skills in hearing ‘what’s not said’ to gain insight into underlying emotional blockages.
What is the most satisfying and fulfilling part of the work you do?

A significant part of what I do is to assist clients in creating an understanding of self-limiting beliefs and behaviours that impact on their ability to meet personal goals consistent with their value systems.

Our priorities and values shift throughout our life’s journey and we often forget to update the rues that we live by. When our values do not align with our rules and behaviours, we become overwhelmed with anxiety, a sense of powerlessness, and a lack of control.

This can create unconscious barriers to self-development and restrict personal fulfilment. My goal is to work through these barriers and create new pathways in rediscovering the individual within their current context and provide the opportunity to find stability within the chaos.

What’s an example of a couple you have helped the most?

Many couples present at the point of relationship breakdown where despite everything they have tried they seem to continue the same conversation and never get to any kind of resolution. They often come with little hope that the connection can be restored, a fear of continuing the same patterns and a reluctant commitment to a process they fear will lead to more pain and heartache.

Understanding and acknowledging that fear is a key component of my client engagement. Working within specific time points in order to evaluate change on a sustainable level assists my clients to gain confidence in the process. It also enhances their commitment to try new ways of connecting as they can assess their own and each other’s efforts to determine the viability of continuing the relationship without the fear of further pain.

I often work with couples where one is very vocal about ending the relationship and the other is wanting to reconcile their differences. I am able to work within both perspectives to uncover unconscious motives or hidden fears and successfully work toward full reconciliation or mutually amicable separation.
