  • The most fulfilling part of this work is helping couples begin to see the cycle as the problem, rather than each other. I value the moments when partners can soften, hear each other differently, and begin to feel that repair and closeness are possible again.

  • An example of a couple I feel I helped meaningfully was a couple who had become disconnected after becoming parents. They loved their children and were functioning well as a family, but their relationship had begun to feel more like a logistics partnership than an intimate connection.

They were having the same arguments repeatedly, often about household responsibilities, parenting decisions and feeling unsupported. Underneath those arguments, both partners were carrying hurt and loneliness. One partner was longing for more emotional closeness and reassurance, while the other felt criticised, overwhelmed and unsure how to respond without making things worse.

In our work together, we focused on identifying their negative cycle and helping them understand how each person’s protective response was impacting the other. Rather than focusing on who was right or wrong, we explored what each partner was trying to communicate underneath the conflict.

Over time, they began to soften with each other, communicate more clearly and recognise the emotional needs beneath their arguments. The work helped them begin to feel less like opponents and more like partners again.
