About Anne

Anne  is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, psychotherapist and relationship specialist in Beulah Park who works with individuals and couples when life feels heavy, overwhelming or difficult to shift – despite trying to hold it all together.

Clients may come feeling anxious, emotionally exhausted, disconnected from themselves, or caught in patterns that no longer feel manageable. This may look like overthinking, panic, emotional reactivity, people-pleasing, over-functioning, burnout, shutting down, disordered eating, substance use, or the relentless pressure to keep functioning while feeling depleted underneath. Often there is a sense that something needs to change, but it is difficult to know exactly what, why the same patterns keep returning, or what to do next.

More About Anne

    •  Making the pattern underneath the problem visible
Anne has a strong ability to take what feels confusing, overwhelming or disconnected and map how it fits together — the trigger, the protective response, the emotion underneath it, where it is felt in the body, the earlier experience it may connect to, and how the same pattern may be showing up across relationships. This gives clients an explanation that goes beyond the symptom and helps them understand why the pattern keeps returning.
    • Helping clients move from intellectual insight to felt understanding
Many clients already know why they behave the way they do, but knowing has not changed how they feel or respond. Anne helps clients understand the protective purpose behind anxiety, shutdown, over-functioning, defensiveness or other responses, so they can relate to themselves with greater clarity rather than simply trying to suppress or correct the symptom. This creates a clearer reference point for recognising what is happening in real time.
    • Finding the point where something different can happen
Anne combines depth with direction. Once the pattern is visible, she helps clients identify the critical moments where an old response can be interrupted and a different choice becomes possible. For individuals, this may mean recognising a protective response before it takes over. For couples, it may mean seeing the cycle rather than blaming each other, communicating what is happening underneath, and responding differently in the moments that matter.
  • The most satisfying part of the work is when something that has been running beneath the surface finally becomes visible — and a client can make sense of what previously felt confusing, overwhelming or out of their control.

With couples, this is often the moment they stop seeing each other as the problem and begin to see the pattern between them. Criticism, withdrawal, defensiveness or control start to make sense in the context of what each person is protecting underneath. Understanding becomes compassion, the cycle begins to soften, and there is more room for warmth and connection.

With individuals, it may be recognising what sits beneath anxiety, overwhelm, over-functioning or shutdown. When a response that once felt like a flaw begins to make sense as something that developed for a reason, there is often immediate relief — and greater choice about what happens next.

Anne particularly values the quieter shifts: when someone catches the pattern earlier, responds differently, or realises they are no longer being run by an old response.

She loves the architecture of this work — making the inner map visible, understanding how it developed, and helping clients use that map to navigate their lives and relationships differently.

  • A couple came to therapy caught in a repeating cycle that was leaving both of them feeling misunderstood and disconnected.

When she felt unsafe or uncertain, she would ask more questions, seek reassurance and try to establish exactly what had happened. He experienced this as criticism or mistrust and became defensive. His defensiveness then increased her sense that something was wrong, so she pushed harder. The more each tried to protect themselves and the relationship, the more disconnected they became.

Through mapping, we could see that this was not simply a communication problem. It was **protection meeting protection**.

Her response was connected to earlier experiences of betrayal and not feeling safe. His defensiveness was linked to a longstanding sensitivity to being misunderstood or feeling he was not enough. Each person’s protective response was unintentionally activating the other’s.

Once the cycle became visible, we identified where it could be interrupted. They developed shared language for recognising the pattern, learned to communicate the feeling underneath the reaction, and became clearer about whether they needed reassurance, presence, space or a practical solution.

Over time, they became able to catch the cycle earlier and respond differently.

What changed most was not simply their communication, but how they understood each other. They could see the person underneath the reaction rather than only the behaviour in front of them.

That is the kind of change I work toward: helping people see the pattern, understand what sits underneath it, and know what to do differently when it appears.
